William Merivale Smith was known as the Swamp Doctor and a book was written about him entitled "Swamp Doctor Diary of a Union Soldier".  One thing he noticed in camp was that soldiers were sleeping in the swamp and getting sick so he ensured that soldiers slept on high ground away from the swamp area.  After the war he continued to work as a doctor.
